Public Consultation Principles

Introduction

The Town of Milton supports the open flow of information between government and the community in order to assist in the decision-making process on issues that affect the public. The Town of Milton is committed to the following principles which were adopted by Council on February 28, 2005:

Value and Encourage Public Input
To assist in the decision-making process on Town projects, programs and services.

Share Information and Educate
To share information and educate the public to promote awareness.

Early Involvement
By incorporating planning for public consultation in the design of projects.

Timeliness
Will meet all legislated notice requirements established in legislation or policy.

Openness/Two-Way Communication
The public will be provided opportunities to share their views and the Town will listen to the views expressed.

Accessibility/Diversity/Inclusiveness
Within reasonable expectations, consultation will seek to involve all members of the public who may potentially be affected.

Mutual Respect/Objectivity
To consult in good faith and in a fair and respectful manner while aspiring to balance the concerns of those directly affected with the interests of the wider community.

Efficiency/Effectiveness
Will be organized to maximize public involvement and to make effective use of everyone's time.

Privacy
Will comply with all legislation as it pertains to privacy/freedom of information.

Clarity
Will communicate information to the public in a manner that is meaningful, effective, clear, understandable and addresses all affected interests.

Responsiveness/Feedback
Will respond to expressed needs and concerns in a timely and constructive manner.

Evaluation/Closure
The public input arising from consultations will be considered as part of the decision-making process leading to a final decision.

Transparency
Will communicate at the outset of a public consultation process the nature of the issue to be addressed by the consultation, the objectives and scope of the consultation and the roles and responsibilities of participants.

Accountability
The Town is accountable to the public for consultation processes, final decisions and outcomes.
