Having a visible address on your house is critical for emergency services to be able to find you as quickly as possible. We encourage you to learn more about municipal house addressing to ensure the safety of you and your family.
By-law No. 27-97 concerning the numbering of buildings and lots in the Town of Milton was passed in May of 1997. It mandated that municipal address numbers be assigned to buildings and vacant lots. Furthermore, it mandated that the owner of the property must display the municipal address number. It specified both urban and rural requirements and stated that where an owner fails to display a number, the Corporation may do so and the expense may be collected in the same manner as municipal taxes.
In October 2003, the by-law was amended (By-law No. 138-2003) to change the requirement to display municipal address numbers prior to occupancy and that the Fire Chief was responsible for its enforcement.
The Town of Milton's Policy No. 66, "Emergency - House Numbering" also addressed house numbering and had three stated goals:
The policy also defines requirements for signage for both rural and urban properties, outlines the administration of municipal address numbers and allows for municipal address number change requests.
By-law # 26 - 2010 is a new by-law concerning the numbering of Buildings and Lots within the Town of Milton.
It is necessary for the safety and welfare of its citizens to have all occupied buildings in the Town display a municipal address number for prompt identification by emergency service personnel. For more information see By-law #026-2010.
