The Town of Milton has taken an important step in the progress of the Milton Arts and Entertainment Centre and Central Library with the awarding of a design build contract to PCL Contractors Canada Inc. The project has been divided into two phases, with Phase 1 to include the construction of the new Central Library; the Visual Arts Centre, consisting of a gallery, exhibition space, two art studios, and several multi-purpose rooms; and the “shell” for the 500-seat theatre. Construction of the theatre will be completed in Phase 2 of the project, following the first phase.
This project is being funded through provincial and federal grants dedicated to community infrastructure projects. The Town will receive approximately $16.2 million from the Building Canada Fund – Communities Component for Phase 1 of the Milton Arts and Entertainment Centre and Central Library. The total eligible project cost of Phase 1 is $24.59 million. The funding program requires that the project must be completed by March 31, 2011.
The complex will be located on the Milton Hydro site at the southeast corner of Main Street and Thompson Road. The location will be ideal as a gateway to the downtown corridor of Milton along Main Street, and is planned as a future “mobility hub” district, supported by public transit and trail connections. High-density residential development is also a possible feature for this site in the future.
