Frequently Asked Questions about Animal Control - Town of Milton

Frequently Asked Questions (Animal Control)

What is a noisy animal?

According to Section 3(c), Town of Milton By-Law No. 16-84 Noise By-law:

Any noise by an animal or bird kept as a domestic pet, which disturbs or is likely to disturb persons in any office, hospital or dwelling, hotel or other type of residence, or of any person in the vicinity.

It is unlawful for any person to allow any animal in his/her possession or control to persistent or continuously bark, howl, or make noise common of their species.

Is your dog a watchdog or a nuisance?

Determine for yourself whether your dog is a good companion and watchdog or neighbourhood noise nuisance by asking yourself:

Does your dog bark excessively when:

  1. Someone rings your doorbell?
  2. Garbage collectors, mail carriers, paper carriers etc. come or go by your house?
  3. Children are playing outside?
  4. Another animal comes into view?
  5. Another dog barks?
  6. Hearing a siren?
  7. Waiting to get into the house?
  8. You leave or return home?
  9. Left alone and lonely?

If your answer is "YES” to any of the above, your dog could be a neighbourhood nuisance.  This disturbance of the peace is disruptive to your neighbourhood and may encourage your neighbours to complain.

Why does my dog bark and how do I stop excessive barking?
